The Gatsby Benchmarks define what world-class careers provision in education looks like and provide a clear framework for organising the careers provision across schools, colleges and training providers in England. SRS completes a Compass evaluation every term to help track progress towards achieving the eight Gatsby Benchmarks. These support us to deliver a high-quality careers provision that supports every young person to find their best next step.
The eight Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance are:
1. A stable careers programme
Samuel Rhodes School has an embedded programme of career education and guidance.
2. Learning from career and labour market information
Samuel Rhodes School enables access to good-quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities through the College and Next Steps Fair and individual planning at annual reviews.
3. Addressing the needs of each young person
Samuel Rhodes School understands that pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support are tailored to the needs of each pupil.
4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
At Samuel Rhodes School, all teachers link curriculum learning with careers especially through KS4 and KS5 options and Employability lessons.
5. Encounters with employers and employees and 6. Experiences of workplaces
At Samuel Rhodes we aim for every pupil having multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace both on site and in the wider community. We do this through individual, small group and whole class work experience opportunities and other enrichment activities like our Careers Week and Year 11 Present Yourself Day,
7. Encounters with further and higher education
At Samuel Rhodes, we work hard to ensure pupils understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them beyond school e.g. Supported internships, support to work and further education opportunities. We invite providers into school and arrange group visits to enable students to broaden their horizons.
8. Personal guidance
At Samuel Rhodes, students work with familiar adults and external professionals to access guidance interviews to enable them to plan for the future. The school also works with the student and families through the annual review process to identify appropriate next steps and plan for the future.
